Discovery Team Welcome Desk members support the mission of the Lincoln Children's Museum by attending the needs of children and adults as they meet and greet all member and non-member families as they enter the museum and interact with the guests through daily transactions interact with exhibits and participate in activities within the Museum. Reports to and supervised by Discovery Team Managers. Communicates effectively with administrative staff, other associates, volunteers and Museum patrons.
· Initiate play with children.
· Plan and facilitate small activities.
· Greet and welcome all guests as you walk through the floors and at the Welcome Desk with a smile.
· Ability to open and close drawers successfully without error, know what to do if the drawers are not even at the end of the day.
· Answer and operate phones with courtesy and checks e-mail.
· Ability to problem solve and answer basic questions as they arise without having to default to the manager.
· Be knowledgeable of membership rates/benefits, party prices/packages, group rates, museum rentals, etc. and discuss options with patrons as inquiries arise.
· Accurately complete all forms required for registrations, memberships and other transactions and know where extra copies are and where completed forms go.
· Museum Store: know how to find the price of each item, where extra items are stored and how to check inventory, be familiar with the changing merchandise in the store and where products are located so they can be restocked.
· Read the weekly update and be able to implement any changes with museum store, policies and other events as they arise.
· Punctual and dependable
· Available and willing to work evenings, special events, holidays, weekends/breaks and other shifts as needed by other discovery team.
· Work with volunteers, assign specific jobs when necessary and follow up on duties completed.
· Maintain confidentiality with regard to specific volunteer, guest, and co-worker information as it pertains to the museum.
· Ability to follow instruction from manager, and complete tasks in a timely, efficient manner as assigned.
· Maintain a positive on-going relationship with peers.
· Support other departments as necessary with set up, clean up, etc.
· Knows how all the exhibits work and can turn them all on and off.
· Manage assigned museum floor(s) and ensure guests are following safe protocol.
· Follow the daily cleaning schedule and maintain assigned museum floor, maintain restrooms, and special storage areas per sign up sheet.
· Notice when museum exhibits are not operating as normal (on all three floors), taking initiative to fix them if able and/or reporting repairs to the manager.
· Be familiar with how all exhibits operate and noticing when guest don’t know how to operate exhibits and taking the initiative to show them how the exhibits work.
· Birthday parties: set up, clean up, coordinate party schedules on weekend days
· Book parties at the desk, take balance payment at the desk.
· Host parties including: greet and welcome parents, help load and unload, prepare and set out lemonade, check in on party half way through and 10 minutes before end time.
· Support other departments with other duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
Active work-lifting and/or carrying up to but not to exceed 50 pounds occasionally, lifting and/or carrying up to 20 pounds frequently. Work also includes climbing, crouching, crawling, walking, kneeling, and standing for long periods of time.
Primarily indoor work – may occasionally be exposed to some outdoor elements and/or hazards
A minimum education level of high school diploma is required. Customer service experience preferred. Previous cash handling and drawer balancing preferred. Must be organized, dependable, flexible and reliable. Self-motivated and willing to take on multiple tasks at any given time. Ability to handle critical and emergency situations calmly and effectively. Must be outgoing and have friendly personality. Ability to work with children, adults, staff and volunteers of all ages. Knowledge of Microsoft applications is a plus.
