Job Overview:

The Exhibit Maintenance Technician supports the mission of the Lincoln Children’s Museum by ensuring that Museum patrons enjoy an extraordinary and safe visitor experience with every visit. They are responsible for maintaining, repairing, and fabricating Lincoln Children’s Museum exhibits, and completing building and facilities maintenance.

 

The Exhibit Maintenance Technician ensures that all exhibit components and environments are clean, safe, in good working order, well cared for and repaired in a safe, timely, and aesthetically functional way. The Exhibits Maintenance Technician responds to daily cleaning and maintenance needs of exhibits as well as new exhibit fabrication. This is a physically active role that requires a combination of technical expertise in woodworking, painting, electro-mechanical systems, artistry, and general fabrication. Good communication, problem solving, multitasking, judgement, patience, flexibility, and sense of humor are essential in this role. The Exhibit Maintenance Technician supports building operations, coordinates the maintenance of technical contracts in relation to exhibits, and works closely with all administrative departments to address satisfaction issues and personify a cohesive organizational voice.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts daily, scheduled and as-needed inspections of exhibits to ensure that they are functioning correctly, safe, clean and are visitor ready before the museum opens to the public.
  • Contacts or ensures daily contact with Director of Operations to:
    • Identify potential problem areas needing immediate or future attention;
    • Solve potential emergency situations;
    • Perform immediate repairs when warranted;
    • Troubleshoot problems identified by routine inspections and staff/visitor feedback
    • Evaluate exhibit plans and initiate exhibit improvements and upgrades.
  • Schedules, coordinates, directs, and performs routine and comprehensive maintenance and repairs on exhibits and facility, which may require various construction techniques as well as painting and laminate, mechanical, electrical, or finish carpentry work.
  • Develops and maintains a regimen of daily, weekly, and monthly exhibit upkeep including but not limited to cleaning various surfaces and components, ordering and replacement of work parts, and recommending appropriate equipment purchases and maintenance as necessary.
  • Keeps staff informed of maintenance scheduling changes and exhibit closures or repairs that impact the public.
  • Schedules and coordinates exhibit installation and de-installation.
  • Works within an established exhibit and facility budget.
  • Provides regular, user-friendly management information related to exhibit status.
  • Maintains museum tools, shop, storage areas, and other resource materials in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • Fabricates new exhibit components from drawings or approved prototypes.
  • Responds to emergency exhibit situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • As needed: performs various maintenance and custodial duties such as installation and repair to fixtures in restrooms, minor plumbing and electrical problems; replaces a variety of light bulbs and lighting accessories.
  • Be knowledgeable of best practices and emergency plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Active work-lifting and/or carrying up to but not to exceed 75 pounds occasionally, lifting and/or carrying up to 20 pounds frequently.  Work also includes climbing, crouching, crawling, walking, kneeling, and standing for long periods of time. Must display the dexterity and motor skills necessary to perform mechanical repairs and work on a variety of machinery. Tolerate dust, paint, cleaning solutions and plastic/latex. Primarily indoor work – may occasionally be exposed to some outdoor elements and/or hazards.

Qualifications:

A minimum education level of high school diploma is required.  Associates degree or equivalent in technical training with certification is preferred. Must be skilled in use of power tools, machine tools, and hand power tools. Prefer experience with mechanical and electrical systems, finish carpentry, painting and laminate, fasteners and other building supplies.  Ability to diagnose, problem solve, service, and repair various equipment and exhibits. Knowledgeable of drafting, various materials and mixed media fabrication techniques. Ability to read construction and drafting documents. Experience with exhibit design software such as Sketch Up a plus. Superior skills in organizing, determining priorities and taking initiative. Willingness and ability to work toward objectives, shifting priorities when needed. Good communication abilities are essential. Responsive to phone calls and emails. Thrive on working in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of job responsibilities and demands. Friendly, outgoing personality and must enjoy working with young adults, children, and families in public spaces. Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint is helpful.  Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment with routine interruption. Must have driver’s license, own transportation and appropriate liability insurance. Schedules may fluctuate depending on departmental needs.
